Baryun Completes 250th WATCHMAN™ Implant

Marshall Health Network recognizes Esam Baryun, MD, cardiologist at St. Mary’s Regional Heart Institute, for completing his 250^th WATCHMAN™ implant procedure. The implant is available for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib) who require blood thinners to prevent blood clots and reduce their risk of stroke.

AFib is a common irregular heart rhythm that increases the likelihood of blood clots forming in the heart, particularly in the left atrial appendage (LAA), a small pouch attached to the left upper chamber of the heart. As a result, people with AFib are five to seven times more likely to suffer a stroke than those without the condition.

Traditionally, blood-thinning medications have been prescribed to reduce stroke risk in AFib patients. However, long-term use of blood thinners can increase the risk of internal bleeding.
