Job Shadowing Program

Thank you for your interest in our job shadowing program! Marshall Health Network is dedicated to supporting young minds in their educational pursuits. Job shadowing provides students with the opportunity to explore potential career paths and determine if they are a good fit for them.

St. Mary's Medical Center, located in Huntington, West Virginia, is dedicated to providing opportunities for young minds to learn and develop a passion for their career choice.

Who can job shadow?

We define a job shadow student as someone completing less than 40 hours of observation. Job shadow students do not have any clinical privileges and will not engage in any work or clinical activity. Students must be at least 14 years old to participate and must have an educational need.

Participation Requirements:

An online application is required before a student can be considered for the program. In addition, the student must complete the following before day one of shadowing:

  • Confidentiality Agreement
  • Non-Employee Attestation Form
  • COVID-19 Vaccine Card or COVID-19 Declination Form
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella - proof of 2 MMR vaccines or a positive titer is accepted)
  • Varicella (or attest to having had chickenpox)
  • Tdap (must be within the last 10 years)
  • One-step TB skin test and TB Screening Questionnaire
  • Flu shot (required from October to March)
  • Hepatitis B (proof of 3 doses)
Onboarding Process Overview:
  • Submit online request
  • Receive formal application and required forms
  • Submit onboarding documents (we will process your request after all required documentation has been submitted and verified)
  • Receive approval email with badge instructions
  • You're ready to begin!

No job shadow participant will be permitted to enter an invasive area or the Emergency Department unless the experience is required as part of the participant's clinical program.

NOTICE: Job Shadowing at any Marshall Health Network facility may include observing patients in a healthcare setting and participating in medical, laboratory, and/or business procedures. Marshall Health Network offers medical services for the care and treatment of a wide range of injuries, illnesses and infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and HIV, and there is a risk, however slight, that participants might be inadvertently exposed to such diseases at the hospital.

Marshall Health Network is not responsible for any injury, accident or illness occurring while participating in Job Shadowing. Any medical expenses incurred as a result of such injury, accident or illness will be the responsibility of the participant or his/her parent or guardian.
