Surgical weight loss is a very important and life changing decision that can affect you for the rest of your life. Our staff here at HIMG would love to be part of your support team during your journey. The timeline for surgery can vary based upon policies given by your insurance company. Generally, the process takes approximately three to six months to complete from the day of your consult appointment until surgery. During this time, our staff will be working with you to ensure you are a good candidate for surgical weight loss.
Are You a Candidate?
Patient who are good candidates for the gastric sleeve are those who:
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more.
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater with at least one comorbid condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc. This guideline can vary per insurance policy.
- Have a strong desire to lose weight and improve overall health.
- Fully understand and are prepared for the important changes that will result from surgery.
- Have been overweight for more than five years with numerous unsuccessful attempts to lose weight.

- The first step is to call your insurance company to ensure coverage of the gastric sleeve. Your insurance may ask for a surgical procedure code. This code is 43775. They will also discuss with you whether you require a supervised diet or center of excellence.
- Reach out to our office at 304-522-7600 so we can help you determine if you are a good candidate for surgical weight loss. If we determine you are a good candidate, we will then set you up for a consultation and send you your new patient paperwork.
- At your consultation we will discuss your paperwork and further determine your eligibility. At this appointment, we will assist you in setting up any testing that may be necessary. Please check out our surgical checklist for a complete guide of the surgical process.
- Complete needed testing for surgery.
- Attend pre-operative appointment to discuss surgical dates, preoperative diets, labs, etc.
- Submit required information to your insurance company for approval.
- Have surgery once approved.
- Follow up with us in office to ensure you stay on track during your surgical weight loss journey.
